Laura delighted to win first Katie Taylor Bursary award
LAURA KAVANAGH is the first ever winner of the Katie Taylor Bursary, awarded by Wicklow County Council.
The bursary was established by the County Council to honour the success of Olympic champion boxer and Bray native, Katie Taylor. One bursary of €1,000 will be awarded to the successful applicant for each academic year.
The Bursary will be awarded for a period of three years, or for four years with the approval of the Council, provided that funding is available. Anyone with a sporting background living in County Wicklow who wishes to pursue an undergraduate course at a recognised third level institution is eligible to apply.
Laura received her bursary award in the County Buildings on Tuesday from Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Jimmy O'Shaughnessy. She is a past pupil of Avondale Community College in Rathdrum and now attends the University of Limerick, where she is studying for a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education.
She has already shown tremendous ability as an athlete, especially in the triple jump, and has played Gaelic football and basketball for her school. She is continuing her training at the University of Limerick, under the tutelage of expert coaches.
Cllr. O'Shaughnessy said he was delighted to be able to present Laura with the bursary.
'We couldn't think of a better way to honour Katie Taylor, than to encourage young people to excel in their sport. This bursary, which is supported by Katie and her family, is aimed at people who have remarkable ability and who have shown outstanding potential or dedication to their sport. Laura Kavanagh is a very deserving winner.'
