Newtown Juniors FC
The curtain came down on the first half of the WDSL season with a weekend of Jako Cup Final action for the Under 12 to 16 age groups. Our club were lucky enough to have three teams participating in these finals and as the Meat Loaf classic goes “2 out of 3 aint bad” as our Under 14’s & 15’s were victorious but unfortunately our 13’s had to be content with been runners up.
The 13’s were up first on Saturday when they took on league leaders Aughrim Rangers. They trailed 2-1 at half time with Kaydin McMahon scoring the Newtown goal. Aughrim scored two further goals to run out 4-1 victors. On the day among the players who starred were Ryan McDonald & Colin Healy. Congratulations to Aughrim and commiserations to our 13’s. Next up were our Under 15’s who came up against a determined Avonmore team and this was a game where the outcome was in the balance right up until 15 minutes to go when Matthew Doyle opened the scoring. Brooklyn Doyle & Jake Robertson added further goals to cement the result and ensured the cup would be coming back to Newtown. Overall, it was a very good team display, & captain Ben Synnott accepted the cup on behalf of the team. Jake Robertson was named as man of the match.
Finally, it was onto Sunday and our Under 14’s encounter with Arklow United B. The team got off to a flyer when Kaydin McMahon tapped home from close range after excellent work from William Valentine & Sebastian Anton. On 15 minutes it was 2-0 when Leon O’Connor rounded the keeper and scored. Arklow did pull a goal back from the penalty spot but our 15’s almost immediately restored their two-goal advantage when substitute Aidan Heffernan went on a mazy run and set up Pat Carey to score from close range. Ten minutes into the second half David Mackey set up O’Connor for his second goal. Arklow did pull another goal back after a defensive mix up in the Newtown defence. Goals from Aidan Heffernan and a second from Carey before Heffernan completed the scoring with a stunning goal from 30 plus yards. Well done to our 14’s on their cup win and well done to Arklow United for a great game. Among those who starred in a good team display were Ryan McDonald, Mikey Synnott, William Valentine & Pat Carey. Aidan Heffernan was named as man of the match.
Well done to the WDSL for their organisation of the weekend, thanks to all the referee’s, thanks to all our opponents, thanks to Arklow Celtic for the use of their facilities and finally thanks to all our players & supporters for their efforts over the weekend.
