Swimming Pool for West Wicklow

Some great news for the group involved in the Swimming Pool for West Wicklow. They have received planning permission for the pop-up Swimming Pool which is due to be installed at St. Kevin’s Community in September.

They are absolutely delighted with this great news. Swim Ireland are very much involved in the project along with Wicklow County Council and the Swimming Pool will be in Blessington until December and no doubt it will be well used by everyone in the West Wicklow area. The Swimming Pool will be covered by a Marquee which like the pool will be heated.

There will be a number of changing rooms as well. More details will be announced in the coming weeks. Watch this space or check out their Facebook Page for updates.

Seating area

Some time ago some seats and a table were installed in the town square and they have proved to be a great success with the locals. More seats have been installed recently which is great news. There are now six seats.

They are used a lot by locals and especially commuters waiting for Dublin Buses and so far they have not been abused which was the big concern when they were first installed. The table has also come in very happy too and it is not unusual to see people having a bite to eat there. This was very noticeable when we had the good weather in July.

At night-time the area is lit up with lovely lights and they come on much earlier now that it is getting darker a lot earlier. They blend in well with St. Mary’s Church of Ireland Church across the roads which has beautiful lights.

Photography competition

Blessington Tourist Office recently held a Wicklow Wildlife and Nature Photography competition run over five weeks. The three best photos of each round, as voted so by the public were then brought forward to the grand final of twelve images.

Each of the images will now feature in Blessington Tourist Office’s calendar later this year.

The final was won by Mark Caffrey, with second place going to Clare Ward, and third to Michelle Costello.

Prizes were kindly donated by Tipi Adventures, The National Bird of Prey Centre, Pinky Chicken Arts, and Aara’s Embrace.

Blessington Tourist Office would also like to thank Wicklow Uplands Council for their advice and guidance regarding habitats and wildlife.

Draw results

The July draw for Valleymount and Lacken Churches took place last week and the following people won €100 each, Molly and Kevin Byrne, Tommy and Jack Farrington, Sean Ascough, Maria Gallagher, Nuala and Shay Kelly. Congratulations to all the winners.

Town Busker

Enda Kelly was in Blessington on Friday July 29 as part of his ten town Busk for charity across Wicklow. He completed his journey over the August Bank Holiday weekend and well done to him. In Blessington the weather was a bit on the damp side but Enda sang away and there was a steady flow of people donating some euros for the very worthy charity Wicklow Hospice and Care Services and also having a listen to his songs.

Flower Garden

The Flower Garden which has been on the Main Street opposite the old Downshire Hotel is to be moved to a different location in the town before the end of the year. The garden was built way back in the 1950’s and has been very much a part of the town since then. Way back then it used to be looked after by the ICA Group and they kept it lovely for a number of years. In more recent times a local Garden Centre keep it beautiful. Down the years the Flower Garden has been featured on a variety of RTE TV programmes. Visitors to the town often paid compliments about it saying how beautiful it was.
