Home side fall away in last 10 minutes
Valleymount, playing at home on Thursday evening, made the Blues work hard for this win, only falling away in the last ten minutes.
Blessington had already enjoyed two comfortable victories over Donard-The Glen and Stratford-Grangecon, however, they were pushed all the way by a hard-grafting Valleymount side.
The Blues led by 0-7 to 0-3 at half-time, forward Stephen Willoughby hitting three of their scores from play while on the Valleymount side, forward Gary Walsh saw lots of the ball but was well held by the Blues backline.
Conor Dolan picked up an early second-half point from a free for Blessington, however, from the kickout a Valleymount attack saw substitute Shay Geoghegan beat Blues keeper, Barry Behan.
This was the home team’s best period as Gary Walsh with a free reduced the Blues lead to one point and it might have been even better had Stephen Byrne’s low effort not bounced back into play of the post. Brian Carroll and Conor Dolan added frees for Blessington before the home team again hit the post, this time a Gary Walsh effort rebounded into play, but with a subsequent free the deficit with ten minutes to go was back to two points.
Blessington, having survived the home side’s dominance, took over for the last ten minutes and the game was finally wrapped up when Blues substitute Adam Murphy finished to the net after a move involving several of the forwards.
