Michael Dwyers on top against Aughrim

Michael Dwyers 2-16 Aughrim 2-1

On a wet and windy night the men of Michael Dwyers and Aughrim braced the elements to face off in the U19 ‘B’ Championship

With both teams already through to the semi-final this game would determine who would finish top of the group.

Playing into the wind in the opening half it was the men from Michael Dwyers that would hit the ground running and they were finding great success in their full-forward line with Conor Byrne causing the Aughrim defence all kinds of problems and the full-forward line racked up an impressive 2-5 out of their 2-6 tally in the opening half.

Missing a number of key players, Aughrim were finding the going tough as they were finding it hard to get the ball to their key men.

They did however register a brilliant goal after the ball was overturned in their full-back position and they transitioned the ball at pace down the wing and a cross field ball found James Woolmington to fist the ball to the back of the net to give them a glimmer of hope as the game neared the end of the opening half.

The half-time score was Micheal Dwyers 2-6, Aughrim 1-1.

Playing with the wind in the second half Michael Dwyers got the scoring up and running straight from the restart when a long ball into Conor Byrne was gathered and he had Adam Byrne coming off the shoulder to guide the ball between the posts.

Then came just what the doctor ordered, another goal from James Woolmington.

This time a long ball from Alex Kavanagh found the full-forward and he rose high above his marker and cooly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

That, however, was as good as it got for Aughrim as the men from Michael Dwyers really took the game by the scruff of the neck and started to batten down the hatches.

They took control around the middle and started to find their men in space. For what was a miserable evening the level of ball control and point taking was a credit to both teams, but as the final whistle sounded it was the men from Michael Dwyers that came out on a winning scoreline of Michael Dwyers 2-16, Aughrim 2-1.
