Blessington 2-12

Ballinacor 1-10

It was a cracking top of Division 3 clash in Blessington on Friday evening last when Ballinacor, short several of their regulars, put their unbeaten record on the line against the home side. No one had any recollection of when Ballinacor last played in Blessington, no Pete Nolan or Dixie Kenny to remind us.

Ballinacor charged into a 1-3 to 0-1 lead on 15 minutes, corner-forward Brian Hanlon grabbing the goal. The lead might have been more had Paddy Byrne not blasted a great chance wide shortly thereafter.

Despite the score line, possession was evenly balanced with Ballinacor keeper Ciaran O’Neill keeping out goal bound efforts from Ruairi Finan and Michael Nugent. The Blues eventually got into stride and following points from Ethan Cotter and Jordan Nolan, Adam Boland slotted home a Blues penalty and after 20 minutes the game was level.

Ruairi Finan added another Blues point and they were never thereafter headed, leading 1-6 to 1-5 at the break. The Ballinacor position was not helped by an unnecessary black card picked up just on the break by Brian Hanlon.

The first 20 minutes of the second half were evenly contested. There was only a point between the sides with ten minutes to go. Paddy Byrne at centre forward for Ballinacor was key to their performance as he kicked four second-half points.

Lucas Sarkauskas put the Blues two points up with eight minutes left as Ballinacor’s Brian Hanlon hit the upright and Paddy Byrne drove a great chance wide. The Blues, off the hook, put together a fine passing move which saw midfielder Adam Boland land his second goal and wrap up the points for the Blues.
