Evelynn Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Spurling (nee Redmond) will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her elegance and her business acumen.

She died peacefully on January 25 surrounded by her loving family in the care of Kilcoole Lodge Nursing Home.

Born in 1935, Betty was the eldest of seven children. The Redmond family initially lived in Bray, before moving to Greystones. 

As a teenager, she worked in the Penny Cooks cafe in Greystones and also in a sweet factory in Bray.

Betty was known for her life-long love of fashion and her sense of elegance. She learned dressmaking while living with an aunt in Manchester.

It was also while in Manchester that Betty won a modelling competition in 1953. However, she decided to move home to Greystones. 

Later, she moved to London where she married the love of her life, builder Ossie Spurling from Greystones, in 1954.

The happy couple later moved back to Greystones. Betty and Ossie were devoted to one another throughout their lives and raised six children together. 

In 1968, the Spurling family made the move to Australia, but they later returned to Greystones.

Betty had a deep faith and regularly attended services at St Patrick’s Church, Greystones. She was a proud grandmother and great grandmother. Betty adored and was deeply loved in return by her 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  

Betty was also renowned for her skill as a businesswoman. Her ventures included a florist, a bed and breakfast and a hardware store. The family bought the former Ormonde Cinema in Greystones in the 1970s. From this, they would develop a thriving family-owned business group which includes the Movies @ cinema multiplexes in Gorey, Co. Wexford, and Dundrum, and Swords, Co. Dublin.

Betty who was a director of the group and all Movies@Cinemas were closed on Friday, January 28 as a mark of respect to her.

Evelynn Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Spurling was the beloved wife of Ossie, much adored mother of Graham, Debbie, Katinka, Allyson, Ruth and Joanna, cherished mother-in-law of John, John and Patrick and remembered by Ruth’s partner Joe.

She is sadly missed by her 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and remembered always by her sisters Lana and Mimi, brothers Leslie and Ken, predeceased by her siblings Jean, John and Irene.

She is much loved and missed by her sisters-in-law Phil, June and Elizabeth and brothers-in-law Liam and Noel, deeply regretted by her large extended family and a wide circle of friends.

Betty Spurling was laid to rest at Redford Cemetery on Friday, January 28 following a funeral service at St. Patrick’s Church, Greystones.
