Greystones and a delegation from Holyhead, celebrated a decade of kinship with an action packed weekend that included the ceremonial switching on of Greystones’ Christmas lights.

Cllr Stephen Stokes thanked the Holyhead delegation that visited to mark 10 years of twinning. Cllr Stokes said: “Saturday, November 19, was a special day in our Greystones-Holyhead twinning partnership.

“Firstly Holyhead Santa brought joy to the children of our town, with a wonderful procession. Following this there was a remarkable sold out concert at the Whale Theatre, with the Holyhead Male Voice Choir and the Magee Brothers performing. We could not have asked for a better day.”

Joining the Holyhead delegation was Virginia Crosbie, Member of Parliament for Anglesey. In the build up to the festivities, the Holyhead delegation had a tour of several Greystones facilities including Greystones Library, the Shoreline Centre, and the Shoreline Leisure Sports Park in Charlesland.

The tour was led by Cllr Stokes and Kathleen Kelleher, and had special talks from representative of the Shoreline Centres including Eamonn Whelan.

Cllr Stokes added: “Many members to the Holyhead delegation praised the facilities in Greystones.

“Of course they too have many excellent amenities, so hopefully these visits help to inspire each other to look at new areas.”

The Holyhead delegation also visited the Greystones Municipal District Offices where a number of encouraging speeches were made by Virginia Crosbie MP, Cllr Gerry Walsh (Cathaoirleach, Greystones Municipal District), Cllr Adrienne Edwards (Mayor of Holyhead), Cllr Stephen Stokes, and Kathleen Kelleher (Former Mayor of Greystones).

Cllr Stokes in recalling how the twinning partnership came to pass said: “In 2009 the Tourism and Twinning Subcommittee of Greystones Town Council was given a remit to explore twinning options with UK towns, especially those with a maritime focus. That committee consisted of myself as Chairperson, Ciaran Hayden, and James O’Sullivan

“Holyhead heard that Greystones was seeking a twinning partnership and wrote to Greystones Town Council.

“From there we had some exploratory meetings. Both sides agreed that this was a great opportunity to promote community relations and understanding.” A formal twinning partnership was concluded between Greystones and Holyhead in 2012. Over the past 10 years numerous groups have participated in twinning activities including cultural, maritime and sporting.”

Cllr Stephen Stokes paid tribute to several Greystones organisers who helped to make the visit a success.

Cllr Stokes said: “Tawnia Kearns and Kay Coughlan from Wicklow County Council went above and beyond to coordinate the logistics.

“Former Greystones Mayor, Kathleen Kelleher is a stalwart of our twinning relations. She is consistently the key link that brings lots of groups together. Cllr Gerry Walsh was superb. His support for Santa’s parade planning was invaluable.

Cllr Walsh also made everyone very welcome with warm words of support for our Holyhead partners. Greystones Town Team had the vision to make Holyhead Santa a reality in 2021 and 2022.

“Finally a big thank you to An Garda Síochána and Greystones Fire Service for their continued support which is appreciated.”
