After seeing the King of Greystones Triathlon raise more than €60,000 for the Gavin Glynn Foundation, the charity has decided to give back to the Greystones community by installing a new defibrillator in the town.

The defibrillator, which is located on the wall behind the monument in Greystones, is the newest AED device to be put in the town.

John Glynn, Co-Founder and Director of the charity which helps those with cancer source alternative treatments not available in Ireland, was happy to lend a hand to ensure that Greystones is prepared in the event of a cardiac emergency.

“It was always about giving back to the actual community in Greystones for their support for our foundation and our event,” explained John. "We have close contact with Greystones Fire Brigade, and we wanted to do something to support their initiative to put more defibrillators all around Greystones.”

John says he hopes that his move will encourage other organisations and individuals to fund defibrillators for Greystones.

“It would be great to get them in every housing estate in Greystones and the surrounding areas,” he said. “All businesses around the town should really be putting money forward and supporting Greystones Fire Brigade to get more devices.

“I think there should be an initiative to support getting them installed and getting easy access to them. What price can you put on someone’s life?”

The new defibrillator comes with instructions for use in case of an emergency, but there has also been a drive to train people to become certified operators of AEDs and defibrillators. John has praised the efforts of those training the public for the worst-case scenario.

“It is very self-explanatory in regard to how to use the device,” he said. “The schools in Greystones are currently doing first aid courses and focusing on having to use an AED device. I know the fire station have done a number of outdoor workshops to the public and showed them how to perform CPR and use an AED device which is phenomenal work by them.”
