Wicklow Fine Gael Minister Simon Harris TD has confirmed that Wicklow County Council will work with the Delgany Community Council to secure the former Health Centre in Delgany for a new multi-purpose community facility

The HSE owns the building and had said it was going to put the vacant building up for sale on the open market, but both Minister Harris and Deputy Jennifer Whitmore voiced their support for it remaining a public facility and being transferred to the Council.

A proposal for what the building could become has been presented by the Delgany Community Council and received support from Minister Harris, who said: “The former Health Centre in Delgany village has been vacant for many years and recently the Delgany Community Council (DCC) came forward with an excellent proposal for it to become the location of a new multi-purpose community facility.

“I am delighted to support the proposal and today Wicklow County Council has confirmed to me their support and the next step is for the process to be initiated for the HSE to transfer the building to the County Council”.

Minister Harris continued: “In 2020 I had called for Wicklow County Council to conduct a Community and Social Audit of Delgany and the exercise carried out identified that Delgany had 20 per cent of the population of the Greystones Municipal District but only 3 per cent of the community facilities.

“Delgany Community Council’s vision is for the centre to serve as a Community Health, Wellbeing and Biodiversity Hub. This would include an interpretive centre showcasing the rich environmental resources and built heritage in Delgany.

“It is intended that the centre would also build on the strength of existing local volunteer groups and include space for local mother and baby groups, mature citizens, yoga/pilates, art classes, meditation classes and youth clubs.”

Minister Harris has said he will continue to work with the Delgany Community Council and Wicklow County Council to bring this vision to life.
