RDA News

At a recent meeting of the RDA Committee Cllr Pat Kennedy announced that a community grant of €11,000 had been awarded to the RDA. This very welcome news certainly lifted the spirits of the Committee and the money will go towards the upkeep and maintenance of the RDA Hall, the Fairgreen and the Parnell Memorial Park. Thanks to Pat Kennedy who never fails to keep community groups informed of grants available and always supports local initiatives. The money will be put to very good use. Other groups in the town also benefited from the fund and this will no doubt be beneficial to all. Thanks to Pat as always.

The Parnell Memorial Park requires significant attention over the summer with work needed on a drain, the stream and the paths. The Wicklow 400 Deer which was damaged again was discussed and agreed that the deer would remain but without antlers. The annual fireworks which are normally put on by the RDA will be suspended for this year but the RDA will work with the Christmas Festival Committee on an alternative in December. Huge compliments to the committee who helped with the refreshments for over 3000 cyclists at the Wicklow 200 recently in the RDA Hall.

Cllr Pat Kennedy updated the Committee on Council work. The bike rack is now permanently situated at the Market Square. Works are ongoing on Saville Cross and a recent engineer and traffic report shows that the average speed is 90km per hour. A roundabout and pedestrian crossing will be considered as safety measures. Avondale has re-opened and the Committee wished Coillte and the all involved the very best for the future. Votes of sympathy were extended to the families of Martin Kennedy, Bridie Brún and Robert Bradshaw (brother in law of Chairman Seamus O’Toole), all who died recently, May they rest in peace.

Birthday wishes were extended by the Committee to Mrs Bridget Kelly, Lower Street who was the young age of 97 and John Joe Mitchell who was 21 and a bit–both celebrated their birthdays on the 25th June.

The Committee congratulated Liam Kelly who completed four marathons in 22 hours in aid of four charities recently. Liam is heavily involved in community activities and organisations in the town and is an inspiration to young and old.

Weekly bingo continues on Friday nights in the RDA Hall at 8.30pm. Bingo for some is a very important social outing and the RDA Committee hope that it continues for many years to come. However, it needs support in order to compete with on-line bingos. With brighter days ahead hopefully the attendance will increase and will strengthen throughout the summer. As always the RDA will welcome anyone who would like to help out with the running of the bingo which is done on a voluntary basis every Friday night.
