New video explores medieval motte and bailey of Castlekevin

ROUNDWOOD and District Historical and Folklore Society has produced a video which explores the historical background of Castlekevin in conjunction with Wicklow Uplands Council.

The medieval motte and bailey of Castlekevin was to the forefront of Irish history for four centuries. Today, however, the overgrown earthworks of this once-great political and military site might be easily overlooked by the casual passer-by.

The story of Castlekevin shows how important a role it played in medieval Ireland. The Motte and Bailey were built by Anglo-Normans in around 1200 and in 1225, the Archbishop of Dublin was granted a weekly market at Castlekevin, making this market about 800 years old.

The video was narrated by Eoin Medlycott and was produced as part of Heritage Week. It can be viewed on YouTube.
