NEWTOWNMOUNTKENNEDY Tidy Towns launched the 1798 Festival of Remembrance at the Parkview Hotel and outlined a programme of events due to take place in May.

The festival will commemorate the 225th anniversary of the Battle of Newtownmountkennedy and the events leading up to and following the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798, the largest national rebellion in Irish History.

Historian Ruán O'Donnell was a guest speaker at the launch, which also featured local Newtown residents dressed in period costumes and military attire from the late 1700s.

Newtownmountkennedy will host a series of events over the weekend of May 26 to May 28, including a lecture series delivered in the local community centre, a music and culture night featuring local musicians and Comhaltas, an across faiths ecumenical service within St Catherine’s seventh Century ruined church in Kiladreenan and a major battle re-enactment by Wexford Pike Committee along the main street.
