Tom McGrath’s wanderings have come to an end – or have they? Tom has clocked up visits to more countries than he can count. He has worked in a variety of careers, from music journalist to diplomat. He has played international squash. But now he and wife Monica have settled in Wicklow Town, in a house which commands gorgeous views out across The Murrough, with the Sugar Loaf drawing the eye in the distance. On a fine day, this place is as beautiful as the famed Sorrento coast in Italy. Meanwhile, his sporting urges are catered for by hacking around the Potter’s Point golf course.

He should be a man at peace with himself, free to enjoy the sea breezes and continue the writing which has been the constant thread of his adult life. Yet he gives the impression that the wanderlust which has propelled him throughout his career is not sated, not quite. So let’s make the most of him while he is here with all his cheerful, wise, irreverent and well-expressed experience of the world.
