Mick Kenny RIP

Sad news to report this week with the passing of Mick Kenny, Carrigoona Close who died peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family & all the wonderful staff at Wicklow Hospice Magheramore. Mick will be remembered with love by his devoted wife Margaret (née O’Brien), adored son John, sisters Breda, Phyllis & Geraldine, daughter-in-law Shelly, grandsons Mikey & Noah, sisters-in-law Jean & Pat, brothers-in-law John, Joe, John, Hughie & the late George Walsh, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours & large circle of friends.

Mick’s funeral cortège left from his home on Thursday morning walking to St. Mochonog’s Church for Funeral Mass at 11am after which Mick was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery where a large crowd gathered to say a final farewell to a real gentleman.

Local neighbour and friend Christy stated what a fantastic person and great community member Mick was and he will be remembered fondly. Mick was always first to help out with any voluntary work to enhance the appearance of the local area and also, a great supporter of all fundraisers for the residents committee. But Mick’s passion was his beloved wife Margaret whom he walked with most days also and his pride and joy, son John. We as a community can only pass on our condolences to them and the extended family at this very sad time. Rest in Peace Mick.

History lecture

The committee of our Kilmacanogue History Society were delighted with the large turnout on Monday 6th of March to hear Marc McMenamin’s fascinating Talk on “Ireland’s Secret War” with tales of espionage and a look into what rarely makes it into the media.

There was great demand for his latest book and please keep an ear out for Marc who will be on “The History Show” on RTE 1 radio in a couple of weeks’ time where he is being interviewed by Myles Dungan.

The Society’s next Talk will be on “ The Kennedy’s of Newtownmountkennedy” which will be in Kilmacanogue Parish Hall on Monday 3rd April. This promises to be a very interesting talk presented by Therese Hicks, with a lot of local interest- will update later.

Kieren turns 18

Congratulations to Kieren Griffith who celebrated turning 18 with a party for family and friends in Plucks last Saturday night. Kieren was joined by his proud parents Rosie and Colm Griffith and big sister Lydia and her partner Ryan Tynan and a special wish comes from Kieren’s little nephew Tyler who was a little to young to make the celebrations.

A special congratulations also from all of your teammates in Glencormac. He will have another event to look forward to soon as his family will be bringing him to Old Trafford to see his beloved Manchester United play Chelsea in April.

Sugarloaf Strollers Group

Our local Sugarloaf Strollers Group’ will now hold their next walk this Saturday 18th March when they will walk Camaderry in Glendalough. This was due to take place last Saturday but was cancelled due to the weather. If you are interested in joining the group on the day, then please send a WhatsApp to Philip Mulligan on 087 2079844.

GAA League returns

Kilmacanogue GAA Mens Senior team were back in action on Sunday morning with their first league game of the year at home to Carnew. This certainly was a game of two halves as Kilmacanogue trailed 2-05 to 0-04 points at the break. However a fantastic 2nd half effort by the team saw them turn it around completely to run out 1-11 to 2-07 winners. Niall Meldon got the vital goal in a great team display by the lads.

Soccer action

Almost the entire weekend of soccer fixtures were lost last weekend. However one game that did go ahead was the Glens U10s who travelled to Arklow United on Saturday morning. Despite the horrendous conditions, this finished up been a 3-3 thriller. The Glens defence were excellent with goalkeeper Blake Farrell making some fantastic saves. The goals were scored by Nicholas Mannerings, Ben Dempsey and Paddy Levins. As it was such an awful morning, the team stopped off in Burger King on the way home, a just reward for their efforts.
