U-17s suffer defeat

Cabinteely 1, Wexford Youths 0: Talented young goalkeeper Adam Dunbar put in a man of the match display as Wexford Youths went down to a narrow defeat in their SSE Airtricity League Under-17 League match in Stradbrook on Sunday.

The netminder pulled off a string of stunning saves to keep Cabinteely at bay, although there was nothing he could do about Simon Power's winning goal.

The Dubliners had hammered Bray Wanderers 6-0 last Tuesday night so it always looked like it was going to be an uphill battle for the Youths, but they dug in and made it difficult for the home side.

Cabinteely started the game brightly and pushed Wexford Youths back from the kick-off but they found an inspired Dunbar a tough nut to crack, with the in-form goalkeeper denying them time and time again.

Simon Power eventually got the better of him with a neat finish to give Cabinteely a 1-0 half-time advantage that their superiority deserved.

Cabinteely continued their dominance in the second-half and a brilliant pass from Jordan Andre found Ross Broderick in space but again Dunbar made a fine save.

Andre had the ball in the back of the net moments later but it was ruled out as the cross was deemed to have gone out of play in the build-up.

However, Power's goal was enough to give Cabinteely the three points to move them up to second in the table behind Cork City.

Wexford Youths sit second from bottom with one point, just ahead of Limerick F.C. on goal difference, and they face the Shannonsiders in a basement battle in Ferrycarrig Park on Sunday.
