Last Friday saw players from the Wexford and District Women's League collect their Divisional player of the year and top scorer awards at a function in The Bailey, Enniscorthy.
All players were present to collect their awards, with Leona Breen of Ferns United doing the double in the Premier Division by winning both player of the year and the top scorer award, a remarkable achievement.
Courtown Hibs player Marian Cardiff achieved the same in Division 1 by doing the double, while in Division 2, Sal Eustace of Corach Ramblers picked up the player of the year award, with Shannon McGovern of Tombrack United collecting the top scorer award.
In Division 3, New Ross Town did the double, with Jenny Delaney taking the player of the year award and Jenny Canning winning top scorer.
It was a special night for Ferns United in general and the Breen family in particular, when Leona's father, Tommy Breen, was presented with the Services to Football award.
Tommy has been involved in some way since Ferns joined the women's league and would have played a role in their seven Premier league titles and six Wexford Cup wins.
The now popular annual club of the year award went to Bunclody AFC, who have been in the league since 1995 and have teams at almost all levels of schoolgirls.
As a club they are very supportive of the women's and schoolgirls' game, making their facilities available to the league on several occasions.
League Chairman Daire Doyle congratulated all winners on the night and wished all clubs the best of luck for the coming season.
