Elmes to lead women?

Wexford Youths Women look set to turn to former men's player Tom Elmes after first choice Dave Bell decided against becoming the new manager.

It's understood that just days after this paper ran the story that the Ferrycarrig club had chosen the FAI employee to replace league-winning manager Laura Heffernan, Bell contacted the club to withdraw from the move.

The appointment of Bell would have potentially created difficulties, given that his job with the FAI involves the overseeing of some UEFA coaching licences. Bell's reasons for the U-turn are unclear, as is whether or not the Football Association of Ireland would have granted permission for him to take the role.

Elmes is course leader for the FAI in I.T. Carlow. He is probably best known for scoring four times for Youths against Waterford in the 2012 season-opening 6-0 victory.

He will not be a stranger to the women, having taken several training sessions under previous manager Laura Heffernan. The club is yet to confirm his appointment but the squad is back in training.
