Athletics finals in Bree on Saturday
ALL ROADS lead to Bree this coming Saturday for the annual county athletic finals. Eagerly awaited by the children, the competition is always intense and there is some good rivalry with all striving to be the best and win their respective races.
The gold medal winners go directly to the national finals which take place in Athlone in August, so best of luck to one and all. The county officers are appealing to all competing Areas to take part in the parade which precedes the races.
All Areas are to assemble for the parade at 9.30 a.m. and it will get under way in the village in Bree at 10 a.m. sharp. The honour of leading the parade goes to the Glynn-Barntown Area.
All competitors must have their Area number on their singlet. If you still have not ordered same, do so immediately by contacting Delores Moran. These numbers will not be available on the day.
The name of the competitor, their date of birth and the event in which they will compete must be written on the Area number. A reminder also that each Area must provide some workers.
Once the parade has completed its walk round the track, there will be a few short speeches and then the presentation of the trophies to the best turned out Area, the runners-up and the Area with the best banner and then the national anthem.
Once these proceedings have been concluded the races will then get under way at 11 a.m. and the first on the programme will be the Under-10 hurdles for boys and girls, followed by the Under-14 hurdles for boys and girls and then on to the sprints.
At the same time some of the field events will also be taking place. Programmes will be available for sale on the field so Areas can keep up to date on all the activities.
As P.R.O. I will be around the field taking photographs of the winning children for inclusion in next week's newspapers and I would appreciate your support. Let's just hope it is a warm and sunny day so everyone can enjoy the event.
