Sparks fly late on as Fethard stay on top

Fethard consolidated their place at the top of the Top Oil Intermediate 'A' hurling vhampionship Group B table after a rousing second-half performance against Buffers Alley in Hollymount on Thursday.

The seasiders, who trailed by a point at the interval, stormed out of the blocks in the second-half, limiting Buffers Alley to only two more points.

The Alley, who were also already qualified before the game had begun, started much quicker and had the ball in the net inside six minutes when a long Colm Og Doran sideline was flicked into the path of Cormac Foley who made no mistake.

However, that would prove to be the only time Swan's goal was penetrated. Fethard began to grow into the game with points from the intelligent Mark Wallace and with a major in the 17th minute when Chris Molloy batted home from short range, yet the Monamolin side still led by 1-5 to 1-2.

Seven minutes later Buffers Alley's net bulged again when Ciarán Dwyer drilled a shot across 'keeper Darragh Kehoe. With a point between the sides, the teams exchanged minors until the whistle, leaving the Alley ahead by 1-9 to 2-5 at the break.

In a half controlled solely by Fethard, they notched up five early points before registering their third goal in the 40th minute when Molloy kicked past Kehoe for his second.

Now leading by seven points, Fethard drove on and picked off scores at ease, with contributions from Mikie Dwyer and Bryan Power.

With Fethard in total control, the game saw a trio of reds in the closing minutes. First Thomas Dempsey walked, followed soon after by Conor Kenny and John Tubritt.
