Goal-den Gorey triumph

Naomh Eanna 4-9 Rathgarogue-Cushinstown 1-11

Four second-half goals were more than enough for Naomh Eanna as they dispatched opponents Rathgarogue-Cushinstown in the Greenstar Under-21 football Premier championship preliminary round in Cushinstown on Sunday.

It was a strange performance from Gorey, as they dominated for the majority of the encounter excluding a ten-minute period before half-time. They fired all but one of their points before the interval, and all four goals after it.

Indeed, by the 20th minute it looked all but over. Sets of points from Eoin and Charlie McGuckin had played a major role in giving the travelling side an 8-2 lead, and singles from Seán Delaney, Gary Molloy and Jack Cullen also helped.

Eoin Porter vitally added to his earlier point in the 23rd minute, with a clinical finish using his left foot to kick-start a mini Rathgarogue-Cushinstown revival. Paddy Barron's first score, followed by two more Porter minors, somehow meant the scores were level at the break (0-8 to 1-5).

Naomh Eanna's tally of 4-1 in the second-half was greatly aided by two quick goals after the re-start. Aodhán Doyle placed low before Kevin Harrington found the roof of the net as Gorey went for the jugular.

Daire Bolger pointed his first before Gorey's third in eight minutes put the game beyond Rathgarogue-Cushinstown. Jack Cushe found Doyle who laid the finish on a plate for Eoin McGuckin.

The hosts did their best to find a way back but the damage had been done. Aaron Ryan and Bryan Cody both grabbed braces but couldn't find the elusive goal that they needed.

Eoin McGuckin removed any doubt with five minutes left, finishing from Seamus O'Donnell's intelligent pass. Jack Cullen had added their only white flag of the half prior to this goal.

Ryan added his fourth minor and his third from play as the game petered out, giving Naomh Eanna a comfortable seven-point win to take home.
