Cloughbawn pushed on after the interval

The sides may have been level at half-time, but Cloughbawn took control on the resumption to coast to a nine-point win over Ballyhogue in this Enniscorthy District Under-21 hurling Roinn 1 championship game at Bree on Tuesday.

The opening 30 minutes saw little separate the sides as both had a string of wides. But on the resumption Cloughbawn managed to increase the tempo, with Bob Whitty assuming control in midfield and picking off some excellent points both from play and frees.

During the opening ten minutes, Whitty and Mick Condon exchanged points but both sides were struggling to take the initiative. They were deadlocked on 0-4 each at the end of the opening quarter, as Whitty, Shane Greene (two) and Connal Flood had points for the eventual winners, with Ronan Minogue (free), Dylan Dalton and Shane Doyle on target for the home side.

In the second quarter both sides managed to move the ball about with more confidence, as Whitty, James Dempsey and Bobby Wickham were on target for Cloughbawn, while a Declan Power 20th-minute goal helped Ballyhogue to go in level at the break (0-8 to 1-5).

Cloughbawn were first to score on the resumption through a Bob Whitty pointed free, and when full-forward Billy Wickham found the net eight minutes into the half, Ballyhogue were left with a real mountain to climb.

While points from Ronan Minogue and Mick Condon managed to keep them in touch, Cloughbawn closed out the game nine minutes from the end when a long speculative Bob Whitty shot from outfield found its way to the corner of the net past an unsighted David Murphy in the home goal.
