Castletown claim bragging rights

Castletown 0-12 Kilanerin 1-7

A much-improved second-half performance from Castletown saw the hosts notch an opening win in the inaugural Greenstar Under-20 football championship over neighbours Kilanerin in Friday's Division 2B encounter played at a sodden Tomnahely.

While the locals were starting to build some momentum in the lead up to half-time, they nonetheless needed to find some inspiration for the new half as a well-taken goal from Stephen Mordaunt helped Kilanerin build a 1-4 to 0-4 lead by the break.

And substitute Mark Boyle proved to be their catalyst, as he was actively involved in four points during a productive spell which saw them turn the tables firmly in their favour.

Still, Seán Forde produced an eye-catching point from an acute angle to stretch Kilanerin's lead to 1-5 to 0-4 after 32 minutes.

But the next eight points came from Castletown, with Darragh Brooks punishing an illegal pick-up to peg back a pointed free, and emerging Senior star Frank Roche scoring from play after a kick-out was turned over.

Brooks also accurately judged a more difficult placed ball from the ground after Boyle was fouled, and the same two combined again to level proceedings when a push on Boyle was converted by Brooks (0-8 to 1-5).

Boyle heralded Castletown's first taste of the lead when fisting over on 48 minutes, and was fouled for a third time in the build-up to Brooks making it 0-10 to 1-5 from his fourth successful free.

Wing-back Ross Cody got up the pitch for a neat score soon after, while Brooks' excellent point under considerable duress made it a two-score game.

Seán Bardon and Forde (free) brought Kilanerin within touching distance, but some subsequent hit-and-hope deliveries towards goal came to nothing as Castletown held on for victory.

Earlier, a couple of Forde frees and a brace from Conor Hughes supplemented Mordaunt's 18th-minute goal, but they were ultimately undone by a more forceful display from the maroon and white after the break.
