Students at the Loreto will be a lot safer returning to school in September as work got under way this week to install pedestrian crossings on the busy road outside the school.
It proved a dangerous situation in the evenings at the school as the some 800 students made their way home from school, some attempting to cross the busy R733 at the roundabouts in a situation that parents described as 'an accident waiting to happen'. Now, however, these chaotic scenes are to become a thing of the past with the installation of the new pedestrian crossings making it much safer for pedestrians in the area, particularly students.
The crossings are to be installed on both roundabouts at a cost of €25,000 and work is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
'Basically, the works will see the roads narrowed, making a shorter distance for pedestrians to cross, and an island put in at the centre of the road' explained Cllr George Lawlor, who had been vocal on the issue.
'I'm delighted we could get this over the line before students return to school in September and hopefully it will create a much safer environment for students going to and from the school.'
