Irish Water has told hundreds of people living in Bishopswater that their water supplies are contaminated with dangerous levels of lead.
But because the contamination is caused by old lead pipes within the grounds of their homes, Irish Water says residents will have to pay to have new pipes fitted which in some cases will involve digging up their floors.
While letters warning of the high levels of lead have so far been sent to 126 homes in Bishopswater, Mayor Cllr. George Lawlor fears that thousands of people may be facing the same problem in all of the town's older estates.
The mayor has accused Irish Water of being intransigent in the way they are dealing with the situation without offering a viable solution.
