THREE crew members from the Kilmore Quay-based trawler 'Molly's Quest' were rescued off Rosslare after the boat sank.

Skipper and boat owner Martin Scallan, his 16-year-old son Logan and Darren Philips were pulled from the water by the crews of other trawlers who were in the area at the time of the sinking at around 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Martin's brother Aidan said there were no clues so far as why the boat sank.

'They were fishing for razors (clams) and only had one box which would have been about 40 kg, so she wasn't heavily laden,' he told this newspaper.

The trawler sank very quickly, giving those on board no time to sent out a Mayday or to launch their life raft.

Aidan said Martin had been very shocked at what had happened to his trawler.

'What happened doesn't make any sense whatsoever. We have no idea why she sank,' he said.

A small oil slick from the boat was soon dissipated and posed no threat to the shore.
