The Wexford Garda Division has six full-time drugs enforcement officers who are occasionally seconded to other duties based on demand, Chief Superintendent John Roche informed a Joint Policing Committee meeting.
Cllr. Willie Fitzharris, a member of the alcohol and drugs sub-committee had asked about the strength of the garda drugs squad in the county and said he understood some of the officers had been moved to other areas.
The Chief Superintendent replied that there are six full-time experienced officers involved in drugs enforcement but at times they might be moved to other duties for a week as crime doesn't stay static.
He said drugs are an issue across the division but it's the same in every division and it's not a problem that is particular to Wexford.
