Safe is stolen from vestry

RATHANGAN'S church was one of several churches targeted across the region during a spate of robberies last week.

The Church of Our Lady of The Assumption and St Laurence O'Toole was broken into last Thursday.

A Garda spokesman said the church in Rathangan, where Fr Tom Dalton is parish priest, was broken into some time between 3 a.m. in the early hours of Thursday morning and 4 p.m. that afternoon, when the break-in was discovered.

Thieves damaged a door gaining entry to the vestry of the church, where they stole a safe.

However, the Garda spokesman said that the break-in was a fruitless one as the church's safe was empty.

Anyone who was in the Rathangan area on Thursday and witnessed any suspicious activity around the church is asked to contact Wexford Garda Station on 053-9165200.
