Row left Wallace reaching for the headphones

wexford Deputy Mick Wallace was left reaching for the headphones after Taoiseach Enda Kenny spoke in Irish as part of a two-week festival celebrating the Gaelic language.

Speaking in the Dail during Leaders' Questions he had questioned the Taoiseach on human rights issues in English. But Mr. Kenny refused to respond in anything but Gaelic even though the Independent Deputy had lost the headset linking him with live translators.

'Put on your translation system. This is our national language,' Mr. Kenny told him. Wallace has now accused the Taoiseach of attempting to hide behind the Irish language after asking in English whether he would shake US President Barack Obama's hand when he meets him for St Patrick's Day. He claimed Obama 'personally ordered the..execution of scores of innocent children'.
