Around Wexford Town
It was an extra special festive season for Nuala Carroll as she celebrated her 80th birthday surrounded by friends and family at the Talbot Hotel.
Nuala, from Mannix Place, was brought to the Talbot Hotel for what she thought was a quiet family meal, but was amazed to find over 100 friends and family gathered to celebrate her milestone birthday.
Her daughter Anna joked: 'She told us she didn't want a party but then she thought we weren't doing anything for her and was telling people as much! We said we were bringing her for a quiet family meal and she said she could do that any time! She definitely had no suspicions about our intentions!'
Despite the birthday woman's earlier protestations, the party was a great hit and Anna said that her mother had thoroughly enjoyed the occasion which started with a champagne reception before the guests enjoyed finger food and entertainment.
Nuala was joined, on the night, by her daughters Anna and Martina, sons Derek, James and Dessie, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Originally from Ferrycarrig, Nuala was one of 11 children in the Power family, seven of whom were at the party. Brothers Declan, Johnny and Ger are living locally but Herbie travelled from Limerick. Her sisters Patricia and Margo travelled from Howth and the UK respectively. Her other sister, Maureen, lives in the UK and, unfortunately, was unable to make the party.
There were other high fliers as well with Nuala's son James arriving from New York, her grandson James flying in from Atlantic City, and her niece who arrived from Hong Kong.
Nuala is a former employee of The People Newspaper, having worked as a dispatch clerk for many years, through the 1980s and 1990s. She is now very involved in the Friary committee and a large number of friends from that attended the party.
The family stayed overnight in the Talbot Hotel and enjoyed breakfast together the following morning.
Anna said: 'She was shocked and emotional but she had a great time. She's full of beans, we can't keep her in! She loves life and is very independent.'
Nuala went to the US back in May as part of her birthday present, spending time in Philadelphia and the Hamptons. That visit was particularly special as it was also a chance for her to meet her newest grandchild.
