There were tragic scenes at Larkin's Cross last week after it emerged that a 55 year-old man had lost his life in a tragic workplace accident in the early hours of Thursday morning. The man, named locally as Darren Shaw of Mayglass, had been driving a McGuire's Haulage truck on a delivery to a yard in Barntown at the time the incident occurred.
The last movements of the truck were recorded as 3 a.m. and sadly Mr Shaw's body was discovered by the owner of the yard at around 6 a.m. It is believed that the deceased became trapped between the truck he was driving and a trailer and received substantial crush injuries.
Paramedics and gardaí attended the scene, but unfortunately Mr Shaw was pronounced dead. Representatives of the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) also arrived and will be carrying out their own investigation in due course.
'It was our job to preserve the scene pending the arrival of the HSA,' a garda spokesman said. 'We also took statements at the scene. However, it will now fall to the HSA to carry out their own investigation into the matter.'
Mr Shaw's body was removed to Wexford General Hospital where a post-mortem examination was carried out. A file will be prepared for the Coroner's Court. McGuire Haulage could not be reached for comment in relation to the tragic incident.
