The amount of illegal dumping clean-ups in the Wexford Borough District increased by 73.5% between October 2018 and 2019 according to a report circulated to the members at the December meeting.
Sinn Féin councillor Tom Forde expressed his concerns over this worrying trend and questioned whether increasing bin charges could be responsible.
'I totally disagree that bin charges are causing this problem,' Chairman George Lawlor said. These people are dumping illegally because they have no regard and will not pay for anything. Just yesterday I found five bags of rubbish dumped at Mount George. The bags were full of beer cans. They have money for beer, but they can't afford to dispose of their rubbish properly?'
Cllr Forde also raised the issue of 137 fines for illegal dumping being struck out, stating that this figure seemed high.
Cllr John Hegarty stated that having made representations for people in the past, he happened to know that it was a difficult process to have a fine struck out.
As there was nobody from the Department of the Environment present to answer Cllr Forde's queries, it was agreed that the comments would be forwarded to the relevant official.
