Some serious moves were on display at County Hall last week as over 500 people signed up to 'be a dancer for cancer' as part of Today FM's 2019 Dare to Care fundraiser.
The event asked people to sign up, donate and dance to a specially chosen song in order to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society and the event at the County Council HQ was said to have been among the biggest in the country. The driving force behind the day's fun was council employee Jennifer O'Connor.
'I'm involved with Relay 4 Life for the Irish Cancer Society as well,' she said, explaining how things came about.
'Then we had a charity ball there earlier in the year as well. I just love organising these fundraisers, so I went to management and asked if they'd be up for hosting an event here and they said go for it. So many of the staff here and their families have been affected by cancer, so I think it's something that's very close to the heart for a lot of us.'
What resulted was a wonderful morning of fun with Today FM's Phil Cawley arriving to hand out t-shirts and headbands, while DJ Martin Gordon pumped out the tunes to get people going and Catherine Biddy Walsh motivated those present in her own hilarious style. Afterwards, there was also a cake sale and a cuppa for everyone involved and it was said to have been a huge success, raising nearly €4,200 and counting.
'It was a real team effort here at County Hall,' Jennifer said.
'Everyone chipped in and did their bit and it was a great atmosphere.'
