Coastcare work lands sub aqua club merit award

WEXFORD Sub Aqua Club has won an award for its commitment to the environment.

An Taisce has honoured the Kilmore Quay-based club with the Coastguard Initiative of the Year Award.

It was presented by the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment Fergus O'Dowd at a ceremony in Dublin.

Wexford Sub Aqua is one of a number of organisations around the country which received An Taisce's Coastcare Merit Awards recognising the work of volunteers in protecting Ireland's coastline.

In 2006, Wexford was the first sub aqua club to sign up to An Taisce's Clean Coasts project.

Members use their skills and equipment to help protect the marine environment and give back to the local community in Kilmore Quay.

Any rubbish found underwater is removed and either recycled or disposed of.

Every year, they organise a beach clean up as part of National Spring Clean Week, with help from Kilmore Quay Youth Club and Wexford County Council.
