TIM Rice, who wrote the lyrics for CHESS The Musical, has sent his best wishes and thanks to Wexford Light Opera Society for 'daring to tackle CHESS'.
'I know you have already had success with the show and am delighted you are staging it again. I'm sorry that I cannot be with you on Opening Night but I can assure you that I appreciate your efforts and talents enormously,' Mr. Rice says in a letter sent to WLOS. which the group says 'has lifted all our spirits'.
WLOS is presenting CHESS for six nights at the National Opera House from April 27 to May 2 and is busy rehearsing.
The Society last performed the show in the old Theatre Royal, Wexford 18 years ago in 1997 to great acclaim. CHESS is a tough show both vocally and technically and many hours of rehearsals are going into making it another hit for WLOS.
The production team is the same for the Society's last two very successful productions 'The Witches of Eastwick' and 'Sister Act' - which was booked out completely before it even opened last year -with Director John Donnelly, Musical Director, Fintan Cleary, Choreographer, Nicole McDonald and Chorus Mistress, Eithne Corrigan.
The cast for this production features Tony Carty, Aileen Donohoe, Derek Collins, Naoimh Penston, Des Whelan, George Lawlor and Eric Hayes.
The plot involves a politically-driven, Cold War-era chess tournament between two men, an American grandmaster and a Soviet grandmaster, and their fight over a woman, who manages one of them and falls in love with the other. Booking commences in early April and fund-raising continues.
