The body of a local fisherman has been recovered from the water at Wexford Quay after an hour long search operation.

The man who is in his 60s is believed to have been boarding a smaller boat from a larger vessel shortly after 5pm on Saturday, November 22, when he slipped and fell into the water.

A lifebuoy was thrown to the fisherman but he couldn’t catch it despite frantic efforts by onlookers. He was also hampered by heavy clothing.

A massive search and rescue operation involving the gardai, RNLI, coastguard and Rescue 117 helicopter was immediately launched. Shortly after 6pm the man’s body was recovered and pulled from the water.

A post mortem is expected to take place on Sunday, November 23.
