Cllr Mick Roche was unanimously supported in his motion calling for blue lights to be placed across Wexford Bridge in another effort to combat suicide within the community.
The Sinn Fein councillor also called for the lights to be displayed at local landmarks where suicides have occurred.
In his motion Cllr Roche said: 'Recent studies indicate that blue lighting can dramatically reduce instances of attempted suicide, can reduce stress and is a potentially effective treatment for seasonally activated depression.'
He told the meeting that it is important to keep mental health on the council's agenda.
Cllr Davy Hynes seconded the motion, saying blue lights have a calming effect on people.
Mayor Cllr Jim Moore said he has spoken to Wexford Borough District Manager Angela Laffan about the matter and will ask the roads department to look into the proposal.
