Engaging young minds and fostering an interest in reading and the written word is one of the primary aims of any local library, and a new initiative launched by Wexford County Council Library Service intends to do just that.

The 'First 5 Little Library Book Bag' will allow children in early learning centres across the county to collect free book bags from their local library.

Each bag contains five books, one in Irish and four in English. There is also a book bag with five Irish titles for Naíonraí. The bags also come with your own library card, booklets from Barnardos and a guide to Wexford Libraries Children's Services.

The books are chosen to appeal to all preschool children. The 'First 5 Little Library' initiative aims to develop a consistent link between early learning and care services and their local library to encourage a love of books and reading among young children and their families.

The Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council Councillor Ger Carthy welcomed the initiative, saying 'this is an important initiative that supports and promotes early language and literacy development that is crucial for children's success in education and beyond.'

Eileen Morrissey, County Librarian said, 'Wexford Libraries are looking forward to welcoming early childcare service staff, children and their families to our branch libraries throughout the county. We hope that they will enjoy the books and all the positive effects that reading has to offer.'

Libraries in County Wexford will also have some 'First 5 Little Library Bags' available to loan to parents and for story times and reading corners in the library.

A second provision of 'Little Library Book Bags' is planned for the autumn to tie in with the Children's Book Festival.
