A family dinner and an evening of socialising was just the ticket for Kathleen Saunders who celebrated her 80th birthday recently.
Kathleen, who hails from Danescastle, Bannow, but now lives in Liam Mellows Park was joined by her family for a delicious meal in Whitford House Hotel.
Kathleen, who is the manager of the Sue Ryder shop in Wexford town, first moved into Wexford to take up a job as a cook housekeeper, which she worked as for 25 years. She met her husband Amby in 1960, at a dance in the town hall, and they were married in 1963.
Her family, she explained, had wanted to surprise her with a party but she was having none of it and told them that she would prefer a family dinner. She has two sons, John and Michael, and four grandchildren, Grace, Dylan, Shauna and Quinn. Extended family included Michael's wife Sandra, Grace's partner Danny Parr, and Dylan's fiancee Niamh Maguire. Kathleen said the night doubled as an early celebration for Dylan and Niamh who are getting married on October 12.
In terms of gifts, Kathleen received plenty of bouquets of flowers but, otherwise, asked simply for vouchers for Sam McCauley's where she buys all of her face creams.
