Denis devoted his life to his family

THERE was great grief and sadness at the passing of Denis Roche, of 26 Upper George's Street, on Wednesday, September 11.

Denis was born in the Faythe on the June 18, 1932 to Denis and Polly (nee Pierce) Roche where he grew up along with his brothers and sisters to develop a strong sense of family.

He began his working life at the age of 14 in Pierces Foundry and also spent some time working in the Star Foundry before taking up employment with Clover Meats where he remained until his retirement when it closed.

In April 1958 he married the love of his life, Eva Bent and they set up home at number 7 John street where they went on to have six children; Catherine, Brendan, Maria, Micheál, Colum and Jennifer.

In 1975 he suffered the great tragedy of the passing of Eva at the age of 42 leaving him with his young family aged between 12 and two years old.

He was grateful for the support of his own family and Eva's family in helping him raise his six children.

At the age of 57, his sister Gretta moved in with him and became a second mother to the children. Gretta remained with him until her passing in 2007 at the age of 89.

Denis enjoyed nothing more than having a bet on the horse racing and would always give his opinion on the chances of any horse to win.

For several years he was a member of the Wexford Border Fancy Canary Club and loved entering the bird shows. He was very fond of gardening and said nothing could beat the taste of his new potatoes from the garden in the Faythe.

He loved his grandchildren; Patrick, Eva, Jesse, Jake, Adam and Mia who were his great source of pride and would entertain his young great nieces and nephews with stories and nursery rhymes and the treat of silvermints which he always carried with him.

Predeceased by his brothers Gerald, Jimmy, Nicholas, and sisters Jenny, Phyllis, Molly, Gabriel, Breda, and Gretta he is survived by and sadly missed by his sons and daughters, brother Matt and sister Áine, his sons and daughters-in-law, sisters and brothers-in-law, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
