5k Fun run/walk

Dynamic Kickboxing Academy are organising a 5k fun run/walk in Ballymurn on October 29. more details to follow. This fundraiser is to help fund five of their teenagers to represent Ireland in the world kickboxing championships in New York in November.

Couch to 5K

A new couch to 5k programme is starting next Wednesday, September 11, on the track in Crossabeg at 7.15. This running programme is completely free.


Bingo is played every Monday night in the Anvil Pub Ballymurn starting at 9 p.m.

Knitter Knatters

Ballymurn Knitter Knatters meet every Wednesday morning in the club room of the hall. Now that winter is approaching why not come along for a chat, a cup of tea and some crafts.


A wake in the west

The Wayside Players are performing 'A Wake in the West' by Michael J Ginnelly one final night on Thursday, September 12, in the Blackwater Lodge. The performance will start at 8.30 p.m. and is in aid of the senior citizen's party. It promises to be a great night and is a worthy cause.


Blackwater Vintage Club's annual Vintage Threshing and Field day will take place in Blackwater village on Saturday, September 28, at 1 p.m. Other attractions include bottle stall, dog show, live music and dancing with Declan, vintage display and many more.

Special attraction this year is a scarecrow making competition, straw will be provided, competitors to supply other materials and props, prizes for best scarecrow on the day. Free draw on entry and refreshments will be served. A great family day out is guaranteed. Proceeds to Blackwater Parish Hall. Like us on Facebook for more information.

hospice coffee morning will take place in Kyle Forge on Thursday, September 19, from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. Please support this worthy cause.


We extend our condolences to Mrs Maura Joyce and family, Crory, Crossabeg, on the death of her sister, Rita Luddy (née Henrick) Peamount Road, Newcastle, Dublin (and formerly of Knoxtown, Wexford) whose death occurred on August 29 Cremation took place at Newlands crematorium on Monday, September 2, RIP.

Birthday celebrations

Congratulations to Claire Miller, who celebrated her 70th birthday recently. It was birthday celebrations all round as her nephew Mylo also celebrated his 50th birthday. A family reunion and party took place at the Miller family home in Newcastle Lower, Crossabeg.

Local school re-opens

Crossabeg national school re-opened its doors after the summer holidays and welcomed back their staff and pupils as well as new pupils starting in junior infants. Two pupils were also welcomed to the upper classes, Killian Byrne to first class and his brother Brian to fourth class.

The new pupils attending at junior infants level included Rory Byrne, Isaac Carolan, Ben Eager, Patrick Fehily, Jayden Hutchinson, Ben Kehoe, Ollie Kehoe, Daniel Kennedy, Conall McCarthy, twins Cillian and Conor Moore, Alexander Murr, Mark Quinn, Patrick Roche, Charlie Turner, Sarah Carty, Alana Doyle-Freeney, Emilie Howard, Zayna Khan, Olivia Lett, Chloe Murphy, Rubeen Naas, Abbie Redmond, Emilia Matyka. We wish them all the very best for the future.

St Killian's AC juvenile members returned to outdoor training last week and welcomed back their current members as well as a large number of new members. Training takes place every Monday and Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Children must be aged seven years or older to become a member of the club. It was also good to see some new coaches in attendance and the older athletes helping out with the warm-ups.

Couch to 5K

A couch to 5k beginners six-week course will begin at the local community field in Garrywilliam on Wednesday, September 11, at 7.30 p.m. The group will meet every Wednesday and Friday evening for six weeks. The cost is €60 for the course. Call or text Liam at 087 0635416 for further details.

Oulart & The Ballagh

Oulart ICA

The Oulart Guild ICA will resume its meetings and activities on Monday, September 1, six, following the summer break.

New members, of any age, are always welcome to join this most active and progressive group of women. Best of luck to Lucy Bolger and Breda Jacob, who are part of the Wexford Federation Pitch and Putt team who are competing in the ICA all-Ireland on September 14. Anne O'Connor, secretary of the Oulart Guild is one of the organisers of the competition.

Oulart Guild will hold their annual walk for charity on September 22 when members will undertake the Jean Kennedy-Smith Walk from St Mochua's Chapel to Tulach a'tSolais, on Oulart Hill.

GAA New Stand

Last week the finishing touches were put to the new Stand that the local GAA has erected at the Upper Pitch. Well done to club chairman, Bartle Sinnott, who spear-headed the project and to all who worked to complete the stand to such a high standard.

The shelter and comfort that it will provide will be greatly appreciated by spectators and it is another milestone in the ongoing development of the GAA facilities, coming soon after the opening of the astroturf earlier in the year.

An Electronic Scoreboard is also being erected and should be operational from early September. Parishioners, who generously support the various fundraising initiatives of the club can see how the money raised are being wisely spent.

Community Centre Bingo

Sunday night bingo which proved so popular earlier in the year will recommence in Oulart Community Centre on the first Sunday in October (sixth), beginning at 8 p.m.

GAA lotto

If you're not in you can't win. The total prize-fund now stands at 14, €200, surely worth chancing a couple of euro. The numbers drawn last week were 8, 9, 16 and 19. The Bonus Number was 22. The five lucky-dip winners of €30 each were Alan Goff, Tommy Breslin, Bartle Sinnott, Fran O'Hara and Katie Murphy. Tickets are available from local businesses as well as from the usual promoters.

Under-13 GAA

Oulart-The Ballagh under-13 footballers who compete in Division 4, defeated Taghmon-Camross in the Co. semi - final and will play St Mary's Maudlintown in the county final. Date, venue and time to be announced.


Scoil Mochua's split-the-pot congratulates its latest winner-Ruairí McKenna-who won €117. The next draw will be held on September 9. Entry envelopes are available from local businesses.

Split-the-pot Upfront

If you would like to take part in split-the-pot Upfront please put €20 into an envelope with your name and contact details and mark the envelope 'Upfront'. You will then be entered into the next 10 draws and also get one free entry. Entries should be in the split-the-pot boxes before 6 p.m. on Monday. The new term begins on Monday, September 9.

Yoga classes

A six-week yoga course will begin in Castlebridge community centre beginning on Tuesday, September 16, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and they will also be held on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The fee for the course is €60 or a drop in fee of €12. Contact 087 4166766 to book your place.

School news

Curracloe national school welcomed their new junior infants and other new pupils, following the break for the summer holidays. The staff wish to express their gratitude to all the volunteers who worked on the re-seeding of the grass on the pitch. A big thank you to the parents and Guardians Association for the new climbing frame in the playground. Thanks to the children and volunteers who painted the tyres.

Annual Patron

A reminder that the annual patron to Screen cemetery will take place on Sunday, September 15, at 1.30 p.m. This will be followed by the annual fundraising stalls, bottle, fruit and vegetables, produce and cakes etc. All of these will be held in Screen hall.

ICA meetings resume

Castlebridge ICA Guild will resume their monthly meetings after the summer break with the first one taking place on Monday, September 16, at 7.30 p.m in Castlebridge community centre. The committee look forward to welcoming back their current members. The guild is open to new members and all are welcome to go along on the 16th to meet them and get a sense of the friendship of the ICA the guild meets on the third Monday of every month at 7.30 p.m in the community centre. They also have Craft classes on the first Monday of selected months.
