The best songwriters of all time

Rolling Stone have named their top 100 best songwriters of all time and, as you might expect, there are no Irish names in the top ten. However, Van Morrison does rank 22, and Bono & The Edge are at 35, just one place behind Michael Jackson. The Swedes will hardly be pleased: Abba's Benny and Bjorn barely make the list, at No. 100. Here's the top ten:

Bob Dylan ('no one set the bar higher')

Paul McCartney ('pop's greatest melodist')

John Lennon ('radically original')

Chuck Berry ('his songs were concise and mythic')

Smokey Robinson ('most influential R&B tunesmith')

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards ('songs at once primal and complex')

Carole King and Gerry Goffin ('pop's most prolific partnership')

Paul Simon ('quintessential New York singer-songwriter')

Joni Mitchell ('restless brilliance')

Stevie Wonder ('consistently tapped into the sum of human emotions')
