Sprouting your own seeds worth a try

Have you ever sprouted seeds? It's very easy to do and they are an excellent source of nutrition. When seeds are sprouted they contain high concentrations of valuable enzymes, proteins, minerals, trace elements, and natural vitamins.

You can sprout almost any seed, grain or bean that you like, including chick peas, mung beans, lentils, wheat grains, alfalfa, sunflower, or pumpkin seeds. To get started you need an empty jar, some mesh, and seeds. Or if you prefer you can buy an A.Vogel BioSnacky germination jar, I find this jar much handier to use. Most health stores stock them.

Bio Snacky seeds are GM free, non-irradiated and organic and therefore will have the best chance of germinating. There are a variety of seeds to choose from.

You need to give the seeds a good rinse and then leave them to soak. Each seed will need a different amount of time to soak.

After soaking you rinse and strain the seeds, they will need to be rinsed and strained twice a day. Once they are strained leave the jar lying at an angle to drain away excess water. This is repeated for 4-8 days depending on the seeds.

When you see the seeds begin to sprout, you'll only have to wait a few days before they are ready to enjoy. Store them in a sealed container in the fridge. They should last 3-5 days.

Sprouted lentils contain vitamins A, B, C and E a nice range of vitamins to support overall health. Mung beans sprouts are nutty tasting and are rich in vitamin B, C, and K. They're often used in salads, eaten raw and are used in stir fries.

Alfalfa sprouts are rich in protein, carotene, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, calcium, vitamin K and vitamin C.

As you can see including sprouts in your diet is a handy way to improve your overall nutrition. It couldn't be simpler. Two handfuls of sprouts count as one of your daily portions of vegetables. You can have them as a snack straight from the fridge or add them to sandwiches, salads, stir fries, or soup. Basically, you can use them however you choose. They are super healthy and so easy to do.
