The Parish of Castlebridge came to a standstill recently to bid farewell to May Devereux, Ballyboggan, Castlebridge, who passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Sinnottsmill, Castlebridge, May was 85.
Her daughter Kitty passed away unexpectedly in June, 1998, and this took its toll on May. May's husband Paddy passed away in March 2013 and again this had a very negative affect on her as she struggled to keep going.
She was was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be sadly missed by all, her sisters Peg and Kathleen and brother Richie, her children, Maude, Anne, Richard, Michael, Padraig and Bernie, her grand children and great granchildren and all who knew her.
May lived in Castlebridge all of her life and loved every minute she spent in it.
She was an active member of the ICA throughout and made many friends through her lifelong involvement.
May loved her garden and spent every spare minute she could tending her flowers and vegetables.
Her main love was for her family and friends and her door was always open to both friends and strangers alike.
She loved seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren and they brought light into her life after the loss of Paddy and Kitty.
She always had time for a chat and many of her friends helped look after her.
She was devoted to her faith and church and never missed mass and the late Father Walter Forde had been a great comfort to her after the passing of Kitty and Paddy, and she took Fr Forde's death last year very hard.
It was her wish to stay at home with her family and friends until the day she passed away.
During her funeral mass in December a large crowd turned out to bid a final farewell to May even though the weather was not favourable, the numbers who turned out showed the esteem in which she was held.
May will always be fondly remembered by her family and friends.
