A familiar figure on his bike, Alan always had a smile and a wave

The death has occurred, following a long illness, of 44-year-old Alan Bates, of Bridgetown South.

Alan was a loving son to Lil and Peadar, brother to Patrick, Kieran, Brigid, Liz and Peter and father of Jasmine. A well known figure in Bridgetown, he was always out and about on his bicycle.

Alan, who was last in full time employment many years ago, was always available to anyone who wanted an odd job done in their garden or home.

Friends said that whenever you met him he would always have a big smile and wave and would often stop for a friendly chat.

Alan was always the heart and soul of any gathering. He had a great way with children, from his nieces and nephews to friends' children. He always made them laugh.

Alan had a love of music and was always playing songs on his guitar. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

His Requiem Mass, which was attended by a very large gathering of friends and relatives, took place at Mulrankin Church and was followed by burial in Kilmore Cemetery.
