Institute of Technology Carlow has awarded academic and sports scholarships students who have distinguished themselves, both academically and through their exceptional sporting ability.
The sports scholarship programme which is 21 years in existence, provides financial and academic support, mentoring, injury rehabilitation, strength and conditioning support, high performance coaching and access to the college's renowned sports facilities.
More than 1,000 students have benefited from sports scholarships since they began with the list reading like a who's who of Irish sport, including Wexford names such as soccer player Rihanna Jarrett and international swimmer Grainne Murphy.
This year, a total of 87 students competing at the highest level in their chosen sport were awarded scholarships.
Among them were Wexford students Shane Reck (hurling); Cathal Dunbar (hurling); Nick Doyle (rugby); Michael Redmond (hurling); Seamus Casey (hurling); Niall Hughes (football), Natasja Behan (rugby); Aoife Guiney (camogie); Niamh Mernagh (football) and Roisin Kelly (camogie).
Wexford students who received academic scholarships for attaining the highest entry points for their chosen course of study included Adam Jordan Kelly (BSc. (Hons) in Sport Rehabilitation and Athletic Therapy); Niamh McCormack Hayes, (BA (Hons) Early Childhood Education and Care); Leagh Clancy (BA (Hons) Early Childhood Education and Care); Ellen O'Donnell (Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Art and Nichola Murphy (BA (Hons) in Visual Communications and Design).The academic scholarship programme is now in its 16th year.
The awards ceremonies were addressed by Mark Pollock, the explorer and motivational speaker and John Purcell, CEO of KCLR and chairman of Independent Broadcasters of Ireland.
Congratulating both the sports and academic scholars on their achievements, Dr. Patricia Mulcahy, President of Institute of Technology said: 'Today, in a milestone year for the Institute's scholarship programme, we congratulate all our scholars and applaud them for their talent, dedication, persistence and leadership. You exemplify commitment and the achievement of excellence and are an inspiration for us all'.
