The Strand Cahore in Gorey is celebrating this week after its pub food was named the best in the South East. Part of the Irish Pub Awards 2019 the victory means the Strand will now go forward to the national final on November 20.
And what makes this win all the more remarkable is that the Strand's proprietors, Patrick and Aileen Hanley, have only been in charge for the past 18 months.
However, in that time the couple have made their mark, creating what is now an award-winning menu. Reacting to the win, Patrick said, ''We were delighted when we found out. What made it better you can't apply for it, you have to be nominated by your customers.'
And as for that menu, the Hanleys ensure it contains as much local produce as is possible.
'We serve a full a la carte menu seven days a week, with a focus on fresh fish. We also do our own woodfired pizza. As a part of the Wexford Food Family we strive to source ingredients from local food producers, one of our better known dishes is our Macamore Buffalo pizza which uses macamore buffalo from Wexford.'
As a regional winner The Strand Cahore will receive a prize package of management training to help them progress their business further. It will also be included in a special Awards Supplement in the Irish Independent on the day of the Awards Presentation on November 20.
The Irish Pub Awards are acknowledged as the definitive industry standard and have gained recognition as a credible and comprehensive assessment of the best in Irish Pubs.
