Minors footballers to meet Laois in Seamus Heaney Cup

THE WEXFORD Minor footballers will be hoping to improve on their championship form when they travel to MW Hire O’Moore Park in Portlaoise on Thursday to take on Laois in the semi-final of the Seamus Heaney Cup at 7.30 p.m.

This competition is open to all Leinster counties that didn’t progress to the last four of the provincial championship proper, and Laois already have a game under their belts after defeating Carlow in the quarter-final last week.

Wexford had a bye at that stage, having exited from the championship in early April after a couple of Group 3 defeats - to Carlow by 1-8 to 1-4, and to eventual beaten semi-finalists Wicklow by 2-13 to 0-5.

The winners of Thursday’s tie will take on either Meath or Westmeath in the Heaney Cup final. Portlaoise will also host tonight’s (Wednesday) Leinster Minor championship decider, with Dublin taking on Kildare in a repeat of the Under-20 final. They will also clash in the Senior final.
