THERE was great excitement at the CBS Primary as pupils and staff gathered around the flagpole to officially hoist the school’s very first Active Flag.

An initiative of the Department of Education and supported by Healthy Ireland, it aims to encourage children to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle both at school and at home.

The work began back in October of 2021 with the establishment of an Active School Committee consisting of both students and teachers.

They organised a series of events throughout the school year which included “10@10” active breaks throughout the year, whole school dancing sessions, 1km a day running challenges, active lines on the yard, the 12 ways to Fitmas challenge, the Step into Spring step challenge, Active Week and the CBS Fun Run to name but a few.

An “active walkway” has also been introduced to the school to promote exercise and activity while on break times.

A special thanks from everyone at the school went out to teacher Mr Shane Wilde who was “the driving force behind the initiative in the school and kept everyone motivated on the journey towards the active school flag”.
