Wexford twin sisters and models Mallaidh (Mally) and Kitty Kielthy are still on cloud nine after the excitement of appearing in a Gucci fashion show during Milan Fashion Week with 67 other pairs of identical twins from around the world.

The Twinsburg Show for Gucci’s Spring/Summer collection 2023 was the ambitious concept of Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele in a tribute to his mother and her twin sister, which had the celebrity-filled audience doing a double take at the parade of twin models wearing matching outfits.

The 21-year old sisters from Whiterock Heights in Wexford town who are both juggling budding modelling careers while completing their fourth year in college, spent a week of busy backstage preparations in Milan before strutting their stuff on the catwalk on September 23 and described their involvement as an “unforgettable” experience.

"They said it was very surreal to be staying in a hotel with all those other identical sets of twins”, reported their mother Sinéad.  “It was a fantastic experience for them. They got to make lots of lovely new friends. It was their very first time on the catwalk together and it was very special.”

She said she “nearly cried” when her daughters appeared on the runway dressed in beautifully tailored tan suits with over-sized lapels paired with black loafers, aviator-style sunglasses and leather handbags, while holding hands.

Grandparents Michael and Helen Kielthy who are well-known in hill-walking circles (Michael is chairperson of Wexford Hill Walkers) and the extended family are immensely proud of the two girls.

Mally and Kitty were one of two sets of twins from Ireland taking part in the Milan showstopper and were delighted to get to know Kildare  twins and professional models Cadhla and Sadhbh O’ Reilly during their memorable week in the fashion capital of the world.

Mally, who is studying Business in University of Limerick, has been modelling for longer after she entered a Nasty Gal international modelling competition three years ago and finished in third place out of 10,000 candidates before being picked up by the London-based modelling agency Premier Model Management. Kitty, who is a student of Biological, Earth  and Environmental Sciences in UCC, has been modelling for about two years and is represented by Not Another Intl.

Both girls have done modelling campaigns for well-known clothing and accessory labels and have a Birkenstock photo-shoot coming up in a few weeks time with the Milan experience expected to open up new opportunities for them.

Mally has spent the past year working with B Free, the Irish sustainable food company in connection with her UL studies and travelled to Los Angeles and Chicago where B Free has a sister company.

It was through the Premier agency that the invite came to audition for the Gucci show and 68 sets of twins were selected from a long list of 100 twins recruited from all over the world.

Both girls are trained lifeguards and learned to swim with Wexford Swimming Club. Mally is a lifeguard in the Olympic Pool in UL. They both love to surf in places like Lahinch and Portugal and spend a lot of time in Rosslare Strand where the family have a mobile home. For the past few summers they worked in Wild and Native Restaurant in Rosslare.

They are past-pupils of Murrintown national school and Loreto secondary school where Mally entered the Junk Couture recycled fashion design competition. They both excelled in art and are very creative.
